Abstract
487,563. Electromagnetic relays. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 22, 1937, No. 25737. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1936. [Class 38 (v)] When a switch 16 is closed, a circuit is completed to a resistance 18 which changes its resistance as it becomes hot thereby increasing the voltage applied to a relay 17 with the consequent actuation of the relay a predetermined time after the closure of the switch 16. The invention is shown applied to a spotwelding system, the bringing of the electrodes into contact with the work serving to close the switch 16 and thereby complete a circuit 23, 24, 25, 26 to the primary of a transformer 11, the secondary of which supplies current to the electrodes 10. The resistance 18 and relay 17 are arranged as shown, and the increase of the resistance 18 with rise of temperature causes a drop of potential across an adjustable resistance 19 and a consequent increase of potential across the relay 17. The relay 17 thereupon attracts its armature 20 which by impact opens contacts 14 and breaks the transformer circuit. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the resistance 18 has a negative temperature coefficient. The resistances 18 may be lamps with tungsten or carbon filaments or they may be of molybdenum or tantalum.
