[Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XXXV] A reactance has a three limbed core comprising an air gap so that leakage flux may vibrate an armature operating a switch contact 6. The motion is damped by a member 10 of insulating material engaging the core. An electric discharge lamp 11, having cathodes heated prior to the application of operating potential has such a reactance 3 arranged in series with the discharge space and the switch when closed completes the heating circuit which also passes through the reactance. When the discharge is established the vibration ceases and the switch contacts remain open. A condenser may be connected across the switch contacts to reduce sparking.
