Abstract

492,802. Magnetic switches; mercury switches. CIANCHI, A. Feb. 24, 1937, No. 9103/38. Divided out of 490,946. [Class 38 (v)] When a bimetallic strip 10 carrying a U-shaped magnet 9 moves to the left, an armature 7, within a container 1 is pulled downwards and contacts operated. In the form shown the armature 7 is fixed to a float 3 the depression of which causes mercury to enter through a hole 6 and bridge electrodes 5, 8. This completes circuit which includes the heating coil 11 of the bimetallic strip so that should there be an overload, the strip will move back into the position shown and break the circuit. The device could also function as an interrupter. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the heating coil 11 is arranged in parallel with the contacts 4, 8 and the device causes the continual flashing of a series of lamps. The bimetallic strip carries also a second magnet which operates a second mercury switch controlling other lamps, the arrangement being such that when one set of lamps is " on " the other is " off ". Specifications 485,259, 485,564, and 490,946 are referred to.
