Abstract

485,564. Magnetic switches ; mercury switches. CIANCHI, A. Nov. 16, 1936, No. 31352. [Class 38 (v)] A sealed vessel 1, containing mercury or other contacts which are brought into or out of engagement by the movement of an armature 8 within the vessel, is mounted within a protective casing 12 and the movement of the armature is brought about by the movement by hand of an external magnet 13 which is slidabIe on or pivoted with respect to the casing 12. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the magnet 3 is U-shaped and is provided with inwardly-projecting polepieces which slide in vertical grooves in the casing 12. When the magnet is moved down into the position shown, the armature 8 is pulled down, and mercury flows through an opening 7 so as to complete a circuit between electrodes 5 and 6. Fig. 8 shows a modification in which the vessel 1 is mounted on a base 11 and the magnet 13 is carried by a " dolly '' 20. The Provisional Specification refers to Specifications 453,229, 481,289, 482,947, and 484,987.
