Abstract

533,691. Mercury switches. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 15, 1939, No. 30111. Convention date, Nov. 19, 1938. [Class 38 (v)] A device adapted to provide continuous interruption of a low voltage D.C. circuit comprises twc masses of mercury connected with each other through a narrow neck 8 so that when current flows through, the mercury in the neck vaporizes, breaks the circuit and then condenses to restart the cycle. To make the device operate at a smaller voltage, the mercury in the neck may receive additional heat either from an external heating coil, Fig. 2 (not shown), or by causing the current to enter the lower mercury chamber through an insulated conductor 28 of high resistance passing through the neck, Fig. 3.
