Abstract
550,308. Electric supply to discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 26, 1942, No. 1071. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1941. [Class 38 (iv)] Relates to a supply circuit for a discharge lamp as described in Specification 550,309, in which, after starting has been effected on a lagging circuit, a short-circuit around the condenser part 8 of the ballast 7, 8 is removed, automatically (by the opening of the thermal switch 14, the heating element 15 of which carries the discharge current) so that, in the running condition, the lamp takes a leading current. According to the invention (i) the switch-controlled shunt to the condenser includes a resistor 19 to produce, with the condenser, a circuit of longer time constant and thereby reduce sparking at the switch and (ii) when the switch breaks circuit to remove the shunt, it closes back contacts 16, 20 to shortcircuit the heating resistance 15 to reduce energy loss. The various fixed contacts of the switch are carried by bimetallic elements to compensate for variations of ambient temperature.
