Abstract

599,489. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Nov. 19, 1943, No. 19339. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] High-pressure mercury vapour lamp has an envelope 10 of fused quartz of cylindrical form, with the ends rounded off on curves of radius greater than the diameter of the internal bore of the envelope with an intermediate arc of less radius than the bore. The electrodes 12 are of unactivated refractory metal, such as tungsten, being formed by a close winding of heavy wire about the lead-in wires 17 to which they are welded, and are positioned substantially in contact with the ends of the envelope. The filling is mercury 15 giving an unsaturated vapour pressure of 5-10 atmospheres, with a rare gas filling-argon, krypton, xenon, &c., at 20-100 m.m. Hg. pressure. The seals are of molybdenum ribbon 18, reinforced at the ends by strips of the same metal, welded to lead wires 17, 19. The tube is made from quartz tubing of uniform diameter which is collapsed about the seals after the usual degassing and evacuation processes. Cooling is by a low-pressure air current from a jet 27 - directed at the middle part of the lamp, which may be mounted at the focus of a reflector, Fig. 3, (not shown). The operating circuit comprises an auto-transformer and ballast resistance 31 across the terminals of the lamp ; a shunt 35 with a normally closed self-closing switch 34 is opened by the magnet coil 33 when the lamp is switched on to provide the necessary voltage surge for starting. Specifications 503,112, 507,445 and 530,176 are referred to.
