Abstract
1,169,195. Supply systems for electric discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC & ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO's. Ltd. 12 July, 1967 [22 July, 1966], No. 33043/66. Heading H2H. A supply system for an electric discharge lamp of the type having a discharge envelope 1 situated inside a glass jacket 5 comprises a parallel circuit of an inductor 13 and a capacitor 14 connected in one of the supply leads between a supply terminal 9 and a lamp terminal 11, the capacitor 14 having a very much larger impedance value than the inductor 13. The discharge envelope 1 is in the form of a fused silica tube in which are placed main discharge electrodes 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and an auxiliary starting electrode 3. The capacitor has a value of between 0À1 and 1À0 micro-farad and the inductor a value between 20 and 450 ohms at the supply frequency. A normally closed bimetal switch 6, 7 is provided for starting the lamp and a normally open switch 8 is provided to minimize electrolysis effects during the running of the lamp. The lamp restriking voltage is more than twice its running voltage which is not less than half the supply voltage. In a second embodiment the lamp may be of the low pressure type without a starting electrode and the starting switch may be of the glow type external to the lamp. Capacitor 16 provides power factor correction.
