Abstract

955,655. Discharge lamps. A. E. I. LAMP & LIGHTING CO. Ltd. May 6, 1960 [May 19, 1959], No. 16991/59. Addition to 923,961. Heading H1D. A low pressure sodium vapour-rare gas discharge lamp having an arc tube 1 enclosed in an evacuated container 13 in the form of a singlewalled tube or double walled flask, and a heat shield 8 in the form of a glass tube between the tube 1 and container 13, the tube 1 being mainly of non-circular section and shaped to provide longitudinally extending recesses for retention of molten metal, located, in successive longitudinal regions of the tube, to lie on opposite sides of the arc axis as in the parent Specification, has an electrical heating element 11 wound on the heat shield 8 and terminals 5 through which current of adjustable value is supplied to the electrodes 2. A longitudinal strap of mica 14 is located between the turns of the heating element 11 and the heat shield 8 to tension the heating element on expansion. The arc tube 1 is supported within the container 13 by collars 9, each end of the tube 1 terminating in a pinch 4 supported from the ceramic collar 9 by a tubular extension 6 and ceramic end plate 10. Current is supplied to the heating element 11 through screws 12 on the collars 9. The number of turns per unit axial length of the heating element 11 in the neighbourhood of each extension 6 is greater than that in the neighbourhood of the arc path. The pressure of the sodium vapour in operation is about 0.9 microns corresponding to a metal temperature of about 230‹ C. A tubulation 7 is provided which extends into the tube 1 for evacuation and filling with rare gas and sodium metal.
