955,076. Fluorescent discharge lamps. EGYESULT IZZOLAMPA ES VILLAMOSSAGI R.T. Nov. 24, 1959 [Nov. 25, 1958], No. 39844/59. Drawings to Specification. Heading H1D. A low pressure fluorescent discharge lamp has a vitreous envelope filled with rare gas and mercury vapour and having a major portion or portions of the outer surface of the envelope material unroughened and a minor portion or portions roughened and of such an area that the temperature and partial pressure of the mercury vapour adjacent the roughened portion or portions is reduced because of the increased heat dissipation from the roughened portion or portions. The roughened portions are produced chemically or abrasively as in frosting techniques and can amount to 0.5-4% of the total surface area of the envelope. The roughened portion of the envelope can be at the middle or at each end of the envelope and can be bandshaped. Additional means can be provided for reducing the vapour pressure of the mercury and can comprise cool chambers formed by shields between the electrodes and the ends of the envelope for condensation of the mercury, the outer surfaces of the cool chambers being at least partly roughened. Alternatively a knob-like extension can be formed on the envelope between the electrodes, the outer wall of the extension and/or the envelope surrounding the extension being roughened. The roughened portion or portions can be on the under surface or the side of the envelope or in two symmetrical positions and can be in the form of a letter, number, drawing or inscription for advertising. The filling can be 60 mg. of mercury and a mixture of argon and neon, containing 20% argon by volume, at a pressure of 2 mms.
