Abstract
1,005,809. Discharge lamps. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 15, 1963 [July 26, 1962], No. 28787/62. Heading H1D. A colour corrected H.P. mercury vapour discharge lamp, the envelope of which contains at least one metallic halogen compound in addition to a filling of rare gas and mercury, has an electrically conductive shield in the space behind at least one of the electrodes, the shield being arranged transverse to the discharge path and electrically connected to the electrode to which it is adjacent. The envelope can be of quartz or ceramic and the shield can be of carbon or tungsten. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the shield 8 fits tightly around the support 3 for the electrode 2. In other constructions the shield can be a disc in contact with the envelope, an evaporated layer on the envelope or a helix. The filling can be about 3 cm. of argon, sufficient mercury to produce an operating pressure limited to 3-4 atmospheres, and sufficient halogen compound to produce the requisite colour of emitted light.
