Abstract
1477487 Metal vapour lamps ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 24 May 1974 [25 May 1973 21 Nov 1973] 23396/74 Heading H1D In a high-pressure sodium-vapour discharge lamp one or more auxiliary electrodes is so arranged within the envelope as to bridge, nearly completely, the sustained operation discharge space between the main electrodes, thus defining an auxiliary discharge space with at least one of the main electrodes which is very much smaller than the sustained discharge space. As shown in Fig. 1, a starting electrode 4 is connected to one main electrode 3 and extends to a short distance from the other main electrode 2. The electrodes lie within the inner alumina envelope 13, which is in turn enclosed by a glass envelope 14. Leads are sealed into the alumina envelope 13 by concentric metal tubes made of alumina, titanium, vanadium and niobium. Envelope 13 may be filled with Hg and Na vapour, and a starting gas such as A, Xe, or a mixture of inert gases. Envelope 14 is evacuated. Electrode 4 may be of helical form, and may form gaps with both electrodes' Fig. 3, not shown), and may be formed as a conductive strip layer deposited on the inside of envelope 13.
