Abstract

1,148,468. Gas-filled thermionic valves. M-O VALVE CO. Ltd., and B. O. BAKER. 4 Oct., 1967 [10 Oct., 1966], No. 45114/66. Heading H1D. A thyratron comprising a cathode 41, an anode 38, and a control electrode 39 provided with at least one narrow aperture through which the discharge passes in operation, also includes an additional electrode 42 provided with apertures corresponding to each aperture in the control electrode and of the same shape and size and at least approximately in register in the discharge path. The additional electrode 42 acts as a dummy anode and is connected to the anode by a high resistance (not shown). When the valve conducts the dummy anode has no effect, but when it is non-conducting the dummy anode is at the same potential as the anode and the apertures in it are sufficiently small for the electric field on the cathode side of it to be unaffected by the shape of the surface of the anode 38 so that performance is not affected by erosion of the anode surface by the discharge. In the arrangement shown the anode is the main anode, but it may alternatively be an auxiliary anode of the device. The electrodes 39 and 42 may each be provided with a single cross-shaped aperture (Fig. 2, not shown). The anode 38 is supported from a cylinder 35 joined to a ceramic ring 33, and the dummy anode 42 is supported by a tubular member 31 sealed to a ceramic cylinder 26 joined at its other end to a conductive cylinder 2 carrying the control electrode 39. The cylinder 2 is joined by ceramic members 7-9 to a cylinder 1, the joints being shielded by a tubular member 13 near which a baffle 40 is arranged. The cathode structure 41 is supported from a flange 18 sealed between two ceramic rings 16 and 20, and the end of the tube is closed by a compartment 22 housing a replenisher for the gas filling and also serving as a connection to one end of the cathode heater. The filling may be deuterium at a pressure of 0À25 torr.
