Abstract
698,857. Thermionic valves. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Feb. 29, 1952 [March 28, 1951], No. 5345/52. Class 39(i) The anode of a gas-filled discharge tube presents a flat face 18 towards the cathode, the radial spacing 19 between the periphery of said face and the tube envelope being no greater, and preferably less, than the mean free path of the gas ions. The anode is hollow, the rear portion 20 being dome-shaped and having a similarly close spacing to the correspondingly dome-shaped end 21 of the envelope. When the filling is xenon at 100 microns, a suitable spacing is from 0.25 to 1 mm. The anode support passes through an opening 23 in the dome and is secured to the flat cap 18, the dome thus providing electrostatic shielding for the support; this has a glass bead 27 for sealing through the envelope. The tube shown is a gas-filled thyratron having shield grids 14, 15 at cathode potential, and a control grid 16.
