Abstract

<PICT:0962383/C1/1> A thermionic generator has an annular wall 1 of sintered ceramic material, e.g. Al2O3, into which is sealed at least the anode or the cathode of the device, or a member connected thereto. As shown, the anode 4, with exhausting tube 5, is welded to a ring 2, e.g. of platinum or molybdenum, and the cathode 6 is of molybdenum or tungsten protected from a heat source by a layer 7 of Al2O3. A small quantity of caesium is preferably introduced into the vacuum within the enclosure. In an alternative construction (Fig. 2, not shown), the ceramic part is cup-shaped and the cathode is formed by spraying or sintering lanthanum boride on to the internal end face, a connecting wire being sealed in the wall. A number of the devices may be assembled between two plates of Al2O3 having holes so that they may be bolted together to clamp on to the ceramic walls (Fig. 3, not shown).
