Abstract
816,082. Thermionic-cathode tubes. EITELMcCULLOUGH Inc. Dec. 28, 1956 [Feb. 23, 1956], No. 39457/56. Class 39(1). A discharge tube has a pin 19 sealed through an insulating header, the pin acting as both terminal and support for a cathode unit 23 which comprises a hollow cylinder having end walls; part of the sidewall 24, 26 is provided with a heat dam, e.g. by insertion of a section 25 of higher resistance; the side-wall near one end forms the emissive portion, the other end 27 being mounted on pin 19. The tube has an external anode 4 provided with cooling fins or channels 12,13,14. Theanode is extended downwardly, as at 33, to shield the seal between envelope parts 3 and 10 from heat and electron bombardment. A further shielding ring 34 is supported from a flange 35 secured between the metal rings 6 and 7 which join the header 2 to envelope part 3. These rings form a terminal for the shield 34, which can be given a low voltage so that the shielding elements 33, 34 act in addition as an electrostatic trap.
