Abstract
565,485. Uniting metal to glass. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and POWERS, S. J. April 21, 1943, No. 6354. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXXVI] A base assembly for an electric vacuum or gas-filled tube, such as a cathode-ray tube, or a thermionic valve having electrodes mounted in a gas-filled or evacuated envelope, is formed from a disc 10, Fig. 1, of fusible material such as glass, or quartz, provided with a series of peripheral slots 12 in which the electrodes 14, Fig. 3, are placed so that beads 15 of fusible material on the rods 14 rest in the slots. The parts are assembled in a lower die 16 which is formed with apertures 17 to receive the rods 14 and also with an aperture to receive a tube 11 integral with the disc 10 for subsequently acting to exhaust or fill the tube with gas. An upper die 18 formed with apertures 19 is closed on the lower one, and the dies are heated to fuse the glass &c. to cause the metal rods to unite with the disc 10, and the process is facilitated by a tool 21 which is rolled around the edge of the base 10 to form a beading 20. The process enables the rods 14 to be spread apart widely. Specification 565,486, [Group XL], is referred to.
