Abstract

1438995 Corona charging apparatus INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 6 Nov 1973 [26 Dec 1972] 51493/73 Heading H1X An electrode for producing a corona discharge comprises an inner metallic portion of Ta, Nb, Zr, Hf, Bi, W, or Sb or a combination of said metals, the said portion being surrounded by an outer coating of an oxide of the metallic portion material. The coating may be formed by oxidizing the inner portion, e.g. by anodizing. The inner portion may be a wire of the metal, or may be a core wire, e.g. of steel, coated with the metal. A plurality of the electrodes may be assembled into a cage-like structure (Fig. 3, not shown). The electrode is "self-healing", i.e. if a crack should occur in the coating, the exposed metal is oxidized by the discharge, and fills the crack.
