Abstract

In the electroplating e.g. with copper of linear conducting material such as steel wire or strip formed into a helix supported on at least two similar parallel rotating metal rollers which continuously advance the helix axially as in Specification 857,351, the cathodic connection to the helix is made through at least one of the rollers at points spaced by several turns of the helix through sliding contacts, the rollers being continuously supplied with water as by spraying e.g. from pipe 71 Fig. 5 (not shown) adjacent the contacts and wetted with the plating bath, again as by spraying from pipes 39, 40 Figs. 1, 3, 5 (not shown), elsewhere. As described the rollers are of steel wrapped with a brass tape. The helix travels through anodic cleaning, detergent cleaning, and dilute sulphuric acid baths with intermediate rinsing baths before entering the plating bath. Over the pretreatment baths the rollers are sprayed with water from pipes 30, 31 and the drips are directed by pans into the rinsing baths (see Figs. 1, 4 not shown). Between the dilute sulphuric acid and plating baths the rinsing bath container 25-1 is formed of an elastomeric material and provided with an arched bottom to permit deformation to assist in aligning the bath containers. On leaving the electroplating bath the helix is sprayed with water to wash off adhering plating electrolyte.
