Abstract
838,689. Plating wire. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Sept. 30, 1958 [Oct. 8, 1957] No. 31126/58. Class 41. A method of high-speed electroplating of metal comprises agitating an electroplating solution by feeding metal through it at a speed of at least 1500 feet per minute, circulating the solution at a rate of at least 300 U.S. gallons per minute, and applying a current of density at least 300 amps. per square foot of the metal through the solution using the metal as one electrode. The method may be applied to coating copper wire with tin, from a solution containing stannous sulphate, sulphuric acid, cresol sulphonic acid, gelatine and beta-naphthol in water. A suitable apparatus comprises means for electrolytically cleaning 11, washing 14 and air-wiping 13, 16 a wire 10, followed by a plating bath 17 containing anodes of carbon 19 upon which rest blocks of tin 26, the electrolyte being pumped from reservoir 21 through pipes 22, 23, 24, 25 to the vicinity of the anodes, and allowed to overflow and return to the reservoir by pipes 28. The wire is passed round contact rollers 27 and may pass through the solution a plurality of times.
