Abstract

720,336. Electroplating wire. PATENT & DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. July 4, 1952 [July 13, 1951], No. 16899/52. Class 41. [Also in Group XXII] A wire 100 is drawn by a take-up block 12 through gripping means such as a die 10 whereby its diameter is reduced, and the intermediate stretch of wire is passed through a plating bath and any accessory baths while thus tensioned; intermediate guide rollers and direct electrode contacts are preferably omitted to prevent restraint of the wire, but a guide roller may be inserted between the die and the first bath or between the last bath and the drawing means. In the apparatus shown the wire passes through an electrolytic cleaning bath 20, then through acid and rinsing baths, not shown, and finally through a plating bath 60. Electrodes serving as cathodes and anodes respectively in the baths 20, 60 are connected to the poles of a generator 16. The wire passes through vertical slits provided in the upper part of the ends of the bath containers, liquid overflowing through the slits being collected in troughs such as 23 and pumped back to the containers. The wire is maintained in vibration by being intermittently struck by fingers 93 on a disc 90 rotated by a shaft 92. Alternatively the wire may be vibrated by electromagnetic means. Similar means may be provided, as shown, for treating several wires in one set of baths. A pair of grooved rollers may be employed as wire-reducing means instead of the die. In an example a copper wire is coated with tin; the electrolytic cleaning bath may be a sodium phosphate solution.
