Abstract

743,405. Electroplating wire. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 12, 1952 [Sept. 21, 1951], No. 22188/51. Class 41. Metal is deposited electrolytically on a moving wire which is passed a plurality of times through the bath passing each time round a positively driven multigrooved conducting drum connected to the negative pole of a directcurrent source and around one of a plurality of pulleys; anodes of the metal to be deposited are employed. The wire may be passed through the electrolyte vertically or horizontally. As shown the grooved capstan 18 is mounted above the tank 29 in an insulating frame 17 at the bottom of which is mounted a series of idling pulleys 19 of insulating material mounted on a single shaft. The capstan 18 is driven by a motor 20 through reduction gearing and is cathodically connected by carbon brushes 22. Inner anodes 24 may be mounted between the stretches of wire and external anodes hung on bus-bars at the sides of the tank. Before the repeated passage through the plating bath the wire may be passed through a degreasing bath and a water bath for rinsing, and after plating passed through a rinsing bath and subjected to an air jet for drying. Between the baths the wire may pass through cushions or snuggers of neoprene to remove surplus solution. The air-jet for the final drying comprises a T-shaped tube, the cross-piece of which having transverse saw-cuts in its upper half which is parallel to and just below the wire. The apparatus and method may be employed in coating copper wire with tin, the coated wire being then drawn as described in Specification 743,404.
