Abstract

1406081 Electro-depositing metal AGENCE NATIONALE DE VALORISATION DE LA RECHERCHE 9 June 1972 [9 June 1971] 27136/72 Heading C7B Metal is electro-deposited by arranging an anode at least 0.1mm. from a cathode, applying a cathode current density of 5 to 500A/dm<SP>2</SP>, and circulating an electrolyte longitudinally between the electrodes at a speed of at least 100m./min, the electrolyte having suspended therein up to 200g/l of particles of diameter less than 1mm. The particles may be of the metal to be deposited, e.g. Cu, Ag, Au, Ni, Cr, Sn, or non-conductive e.g. microspheres of glass or plastics material. Superposed layers with or without subsequent diffusion may be obtained: e.g. successive layers of Cu, Ag and Au and Cu, Ni and Cr. As shown, sheet, strip or wire 1 to be coated, e.g. of light metal.Al, Cu, stainless steel or refractory metal Mo, W, Ta, Ti or Ti alloy is advanced first through pre-treatment enclosure 3, for sanding, brushing, microbeading or degreasing, then as cathode through metal electro-deposition enclosure 4 comprising cylindrical anode 2, e.g. of platinized Ti then through post-treatment enclosure 9 for rinsing, drying or polishing. Electrolyte E containing the suspended particles P is circulated through the enclosure 4 via pipes 6, 8 and reservoir 7 by pump 5. The electrolyte may be: NiSO 4 and H 3 BO 3 with suspended Ni or glass beads for nickeling steel; KAg (CN) 2 ) KCN and K 2 CO 3 with suspended stainless steel balls for silvering Cu wire; or K 2 SnO 4 and potash with suspended stainless steel beads for tinning Al conductors. An electric, magnetic or ultrasonic field may be applied between the electrodes. Layers of different metal may be plated in succession in the same bath or a series of baths. Localized plating may be effected e.g. to repair a metal coating or provide a protective coating. Specification 1406082 is referred to.
