Abstract

1,272,536. Electro-deposition of metals from non-aqueous solutions. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Feb. 16, 1970 [March 24, 1969], No. 7252/70. Heading C7B. Metal, e.g. Ni; Cu; Ni-Cu alloy; Co; Pb; Zn; Ag; or Cd, is electro-deposited from an electrolyte which is non-aqueous or contains not more than 8% water, and contains dimethyl sulphoxide and a salt of the metal to be deposited. The bath may also contain as solvents ethylene glycol or dimethyl formamide; as complexing agents, ammonium chloride, nitrate or cyanide; and if copper is to be deposited, sodium or ammonium hypophosphite or hypophosphorous acid. The surface to be plated may be of brass, bronze copper, steel, iron zinc or cadmium. The cell used may be constructed of, or coated with, glass, PTFE, or polychlorotrifluoroethylene, and may be provided with heating means. Soluble anodes may be used. Prior to plating, the workpiece may be subjected to vapour degreasing or caustic cleaning, and subsequently to rinsing, e.g. with dimethyl sulphoxide. The bath may be agitated; and when using a bath containing more than one metal salt, e.g. copper and nickel salts, variation of current density will produce variation of the alloy composition deposited.
