Abstract
1,198,193. Coating with nickel. AVISUN CORP. May 3, 1968 [May 3, 1967], No.21172/68. Heading C7F. Non-conductive articles are coated with nickel by the following steps: (1) Contacting with a conditioning solution containing a strong mineral acid (2) Sensitizing using a solution containing an oxidizable metal salt (3) Nucleating with a noble metal salt solution (4) Coating with an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution (5) Electroless deposition of Ni and (6) Electro-plating with Ni. The use of the H 2 O 2 solution prevents skip plating of the Ni articles which exhibit skip plating after conventional deposition in an electroless bath may be successfully coated with Ni by subjecting them to steps 4, 5, and 6 of the above process. The articles to be coated may be of ABS or polyolefins such as polypropylene and polyethylene. In Example 2, polypropylene plaques are conditioned using a solution of stated composition, rinsed in deionized water, sensitized in SnCl 2 /HCl, rinsed, activated using PdCl 2 /HCl, rinsed, contacted with aqueous H 2 O 2 , and immersed in an electroless nickel bath containing 30g/l NiCl 2 , 50 g/l sodium glycollate, and 10 g/l NaH 2 PO 2 at pH5 for 15 minutes at 190‹ F. No skip plating was observed, and the plaques were subsequently electro-plated with Ni.
