Abstract

743,404. Annealing. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 12, 1952 [Sept. 21, 1951], No. 22187/51. Class 72. [Also in Groups XXII and XXXVI] Tin is deposited electrolytically on a copper wire and the wire is then drawn to the required diameter with the required tin thickness. After drawing the wire may be subject to an annealing operation which anneals the copper without damaging the tin coating. In the apparatus shown the tinned wire is drawn over pulley 37 through a series of dies shown diagrammatically at 39 by a drawing capstan 40, the wire passing thereafter over pulleys 41, 42, 46, 47 to a take-up reel 48. The wire is first heated by alternating current passed through it between capstan 40 and pulley 42 to a temperature insufficient to melt the tin, the pulley 42 being cooled by air-blast from nozzle 43 to prevent stripping of the tin coating ; in the stretch between pulley 42 and pulley 46 the wire is further heated to the annealing temperature. Pulley 46 is situated in a cooling water bath 44 into which the wire enters through a tube 45 or an aperture. The electrodeposition of tin may be effected by the apparatus described in Specification 743,405, [Group XXXVI]. Specification 662,387, [Group XXXVII], also is referred to.
