Abstract

<PICT:0969192/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0969192/C6-C7/2> In apparatus for heat treating wire ropes, strands &c., to increase the proof stress and resistance to creep, the strands are continuously fed over a series of pulleys 10-15, Fig. 4, frictionally engaging the wire and having progressively increasing diameters to produce a predetermined strain at which the wire is heated to a temperature within the tempering range to produce a permanent elongation. In examples applied to high tensile steel strands with carbon contents from 0.35-0.9% the temperature is within the range 220-500 DEG C. and is preferably from 250-380 DEG C. With alloy steel the temperature may be 600 DEG C. The wires may be electrically heated over a loop 23 formed by the wire passing over a separately mounted remote pulley 14 to which electric current is passed by brush contacts 32, slip rings 35 being provided for the pulley group 10-15. The wire passes through a cooler 36, Fig. 3, before leaving the loop 23 from which it passes over pulleys 16-18 having progressively smaller diameters to reduce the tension in the wire before it passes to winding and reeling drums (not shown). The wire may be pulled directly from a stranding machine and may be pulled solely by the winding and reeling drums. Alternatively the pulley system may be coupled through chains or gears to the winding and reeling drums. In a modification the wire may be heated by induction.
