Abstract

[Also in Division B3] A steel strand or rope is heated and stretched after it leaves a stranding die in order to improve its tensile properties. The temperature of the rope or strand is made sufficiently high to produce permanent elongation. In Fig. 1 wire or strands 15 pass via a lay plate 14 to a stranding die 11. The die is imensioned to provide frictional resistance to the strand or rope 16 which is thus stretched by a capstan 17 about which it passes. A low voltage heating current is passed through the rope 16 from the die 11 to the segmented surface of the capstan 17 as described in Specification 748,357. Alternatively one idler and one haul - off pulley or drum may be provided between the die and the capstan and the heating current caused to flow from the idler both to the die and to the haul-off pulley or drum. The grooves on the haul-off drum- and capstan would be of progressively decreasing size to allow for contraction of the strand or rope. A device such as a water quenching arrangement cools the strand or rope as it passes to the capstan or haul-off drum.
