Abstract
A method of treating multi-strand steel cable comprises freely passing the cable through a heat treatment zone under a tension sufficient to produce a permanent stretching of the cable. In Fig. 1 the cable 3 passes freely through a heating zone 6 whilst under tension, this tension being set up by a winding drum 5 pulling the cable over a plurality of rollers 2 causing the cable to follow a predetermined sinuous path. The setting of the rollers 2 is adjustable by means of devices 4. The cable may pass through a cooling zone 7. The tension may be between 55 and 85 per cent. of the breaking load of the cable. It has been found that:-1, The elastic limit of the cable is increased 2, The elongation or stretching of the cable before it breaks also increases 3, The initial stretching with small loads is reduced since the wires are in contact with each other 4, The cable is straightened, facilitating its laying in sheaths 5, The wires forming the cable fit each other.
