Abstract

1,040,766. Extruding wire; stretching. COMPTOIR LYON-ALEMAND, LOUYOT & CIE. Oct. 16, 1963 [Oct. 26, 1962], No. 40889/63. Headings B3E and B3P. A method of producing metallic wire in which further reduction of the diameter of an initial wire, produced by extrusion, is effected by applying tension to the heated wire to produce a controlled elongation and consequent reduction in diameter without the use of drawing dies. The elongation is produced by subjecting the wire to tension, by positioning a winding drum 4 at a distance from the extrusion die 2, and displaced through an angle α relative to the die axis. In an example the distance " D " is 10 metres, the angle α is 20 degrees and wire of 2À7 mm. diameter was produced using an extrusion die 3.0 mm. diameter. The tension in the wire can be increased by a loaded pulley acting near the mid-point of the wire, Fig. 3 (not shown). Alternatively the wire can be passed around a capstan driven by a constant torque device which produces the required tension in the wire, the wire then passing without tension on to a winding drum, Fig. 4 (not shown). In a further embodiment the wire leaves the extruding die and immediately passes round a capstan and is then pulled off the capstan by the winding drum, Fig. 5 (not shown), the required tension being developed in the run of cable between the capstan and the winding drum. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the wire leaves the extruding die 2 at a velocity V1 and is taken-up by a drum rotating at a greater speed V2. The speed of the drum is controlled automatically to maintain the desired finished wire diameter. Fig. 8 (not shown) illustrates an installation in which a wire passes over a series of capstans V15, V16, V17 rotating at increasing speeds so that the wire elongates between each adjacent pair of capstans. There are heating means 18, 19 between the capstans and the wire is finally wound on a horizontal drum 20 or a vertical drum 21.
