Abstract

1405419 Drawing MARSHALL RICHARDS BARCRO Ltd 24 Nov 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 54932/71 Heading B3P In a method of drawing a tube 1 through a die 2 to reduce its diameter and/or wall thickness by effecting relative movement between the die 2 and a drawing block 4, the tube 1 is wedged in an endless groove 5 in the block 4 for less than one turn around the block 4. The groove 5 is defined by two converging surfaces against which the drawn tube is held by an endless rope 8 or by at least one roller (30) (Figs. 4-6, not shown). The two converging surfaces of the groove 5 define an included angle of 12-15 degrees and one or both of them is frustoconical. The groove 5 may be hardened and can be coated with a resilient plastics. To enable different size tubes to be drawn, the size of the groove may be adjustable or more than one groove may be provided on the block 4, which can be inclined at 5-30 degrees to the vertical. The threading up operation is carried out by a pulling-in dog provided on the block 4 or by gripping the tube with a dog fixed to the machine frame and moving the die 2 away from the dog. After travelling less than one complete turn around the block 4, the drawn tube 3 is urged by a guide 6 into a collecting basket 7 which is rotatably mounted on a trolley 28. The basket 7 is rotated by the motor 16 driving the block 4 via a variable speed drive 27 and a worm 26 which meshes with a pinion 25 on a rod 20 having an eccentric spigot 23 engaging the basket 7. The die 2 may alternatively be rotated about the axis of a stationary block 4.
