Abstract
610,822. Coating wires &c. OLIN INDUSTRIES, INC. August 20, 1945, No. 21193. Convention date, Dec. 12, 1942. [Class 140] [Also in Group V] A wire or other elongated body 1 is drawn downwardly through a column of plastic material 8 in a heated chamber 6, and passes through a central hole 20 in a guide member 19 having apertures 21 surrounding the hole 20. The plastic material sticks to and is carried along by the wire in the upper part of the chamber 6, but is stripped from the wire as the latter passes through the hole 20; the material then passes through the apertures 21 and is re-united to the wire below the guide member 19, the coated wire issuing from a die 12. The wire entering the chamber 6 may be cooler than the plastic material, which then solidifies around the wire and exerts a piston-like action. The plastic material, in granule, rod or strip form is forced through a heated zone by a worm feed. gear pump or piston and thence through an orifice 10 into the chamber. The wire is drawn from supply reel 2 and, after cleaning and straightening if necessary, passes over a grooved heated drum 3, through a heating tube or oven 4, and through chamber 6 and die 12. The coated wire then passes through a cooling tube 24 (water spray or cool air or water), around sheave 25, over capstan 26 which is rotated at constant speed, to take-up reel 27. The wire is centred by adjusting the sheave 25. The preheating of the wire may be omitted. An alternative form of wire guide 19, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), is described. When the plastic material contains solvent, the cooling means 24 may be preceded or replaced by means for removing solvent, e.g, a heated tube through which warm air or other fluid is circulated. Two or more wires may be coated simultaneously in a single sheath. A number of units may be placed side by side, and individuallysheathed wires may be united, as by twisting, on emergence from the dies.
