Description

Marqh 31, 1936'. A. P. HINSKY DUAL WIPER OR APPLICATOR Filed Oct. 26, 1933 INVENTOR Ammo/v) R H/NSKY BY ATTORNE/ Patented Mar. 31, 6
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 13 Claims. (oi. 91-53) This invention relates to the production of wires or electric conductors, cables or other strand-like bodies treated with various types oi." coating materials; and the bbject of the invention is to provide a wiper or applicator by means of which such coating materials may be evenly deposited upon the wire or other strand-like body to provide a substantially even thickness of the coating material on the strand and for the pur- 10 pose of removing the surplus oil a saturant compound or other coating from the outer surface, casing or jacket of a strand; a further object being to provide a wiper or applicator having adual nozzle or passage into and through which the strand 'is passed, one passage being formed by a die employed for removing the greater part of the surplus of material applied to the strand and the other in the form of a flexible member having a passage therein controlling the finished size, contour and characteristics of the material applied to thestrand; a further object being to provide means cooperating with .said flexible member to vary the size of the port or passage therethrough without distortion to the contour of said passage and without. changing its aline' ment with respect to the passage in said die; a further object being to provide a dual wiper unit of the class described with means for adjustably mounting the unit in connection with a- 30 support to change its position. vertically and angularly with respect to the support to maintain an alinement of the dual passages of the wiper with respect to guide rollers or sheaves disposed outwardly of and at opposite ends of the unit J5 so as to maintain the passages of the unit properly centered with respect to a strand passing over said spaced sheaves; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in an apparatus of the class specified, as well as a method 4 of treating or coating strands with said'apparatus as is more fully hereinafter described and I claimed.
Phe invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying draw- 45 ing forms a part, inwhich the separate parts of my improvementare designated bysuitable reference characters in each of the view, and in which:

Fig. 6 is a detail view 0! a. modified form of die which I may employ.
Fig. '7 is a sectional view of a flexible wiper 1o element which I employ; and,
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing only a. part of the construction on an enlarged scale and showing a modification with parts removed.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, I have'diagrammatically illustrated one method of carrying my invention into'eifect'and of treating strands of the In this figure, Ill rep-1. resents a; reel containing the strand I l to betiated. In this connection it will be understood that the reference in the specification to stran will be interpreted to, mean a wire, cotton, silk or other strand or an electric conductor disposed in casings, jackets or sheaths of variohs kinds and classes and including what are known as 5 cable and electric conduits.
- The strand H from the reel l0 first passes into and through a tank l2 containing the saturant, compound or other coating or finishing material D by first-passing over a sheave l3 at one end of the 0 tank, downwardly around a sheave It in the tank and then out of the tank and over a sheave l5 from which the strand passes into and through one of my improved dual wipers or applicators 16. In some instances, the tank 12 will have suitable means of heating as indicated at l2a to maintain the desired temperature for the saturant or compound employed. After passing through the wiper it which performs functions and operations later described, the coated strand 40 passed downwardly intoand through a cooling tank IT or under a sheave I8 disposed therein. Cooling water l'liz is introduced into the tank I! through the pipe l9 and is discharged therefrom into a suitable drain 20.
At 2|, I have indicated multiple compressed air nozzles or jets for re oving any surplus or water that may prevail on the strand prior to its movement from the top of the tank. The strand then passes into and through a trough 22 containing another compound or coatingmaterial, usually in the form of a thin fllm coating, the thickness or application of which is controlled by a wiper 23 of any conventional form, and in some 5 which extend from the ends cases, a wiper such as indicated at It and later described may be employed at this point.
In the construction indicated, the compound is supplied to the trough 22 from a tank or container 24 by a pump 25 driven by a motor 26 and discharged into the trough through a jet or nozzle 21-. At 28, I have indicated a caspan wheel operating in a water trough 29 over and around which the treated strand passes and finally is wound on a receiving reel 30.
My improved dual wiper device It is indicated in detail in Figs. 2 to 5 inclusive and consists of two frame members or brackets 3| which may be secured to a suitable support such for example upon the tank I 2 as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The standards in these brackets are provided with elongated apertures 32 through which outwardly projecting studs 33 on the frame or stock 34 of the device pass to provide vertical adjustment of the frame 34 in said brackets as well as angular or tiltingadjustment thereof, the
different positions of adjustment by nuts 33a in threaded engagement with said studs drawing.
The frame 34 consists of a relatively large front a splash apron having a relaplate 340 joining the front plate by side arms 34d of the rib 3412, thus forming between the back plate 340 and the rib 34b and front plate 34 a relatively large openported in the back plate 340 may pass and drop back into the tank II. in this connection, it will be understood that the relative size of the complete frame 34 as well as the opening 36 formed therein will be proportionate to the size desired to be removed from the strand.
Pivotally supported on a screw or pin 38 on the outer surface of the part 340 of the frame is a plate 39 having an outwardly extending angle member 39a, note Fig. 5, the lower end of the jacent the pivot at 38 to engage the plate 39 to act as a stop or alinement pin to maintain the opening or threaded bore 391! of the plate 39 in proper alinement with respect to the center of the parts 340 of the frame or the centers of the die 35, and the wiper element'31, or the ports or passages b and 31a respectively thereof.
Adjustably mounted in the bore 39d is a compression screw 40, the outer enlarged end of which has a plurality of radial arms 40a by means of which said screw move a compression ring 4| toward and from the flexiblewiper element 31. Mounted in the threads of the screw 40 at the free end thereof is a spring ring 40b, note Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawing, which enters a recess in the inner end of the plate 39 and limits the outward movement of the screw, thus preventing accidental displacement of the screw 40 with respect to the plate 39 and at the same time, permits the free swinging of the plate 39 including the screw 40 into the position indias indicated in Fig. 3 of the compression of the I removed as with the may be rotated by hand to cated in dotted lines in Fig. 4 of the drawing in the insertion and removal of the ring 4| and element 31.
The ring 4| in the construction shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing has a relatively large opening 4| a through which the conductor passes, and it is also preferable that the bore 430 of the screw 43 be large so as to provide free passage of the conductor therethrough, whereas the bore or passage 42 in the part 34c of the frame is preferably larger than the bore 4 a. The ring 43 has an enlarged collar 4 |b which rests upon the element 31 and aids in forcing the central portion of said element outwardly into the bore 42 in the manner indicated in Fig. 2 in the operation of reducing the size of the bore or passage 31a in said element.
At this time, it will be understood that as the ring 4| is forced upon the element 31 by the screw 40, the material of the element 31 which is preferably composed of rubber is forced into the bore or opening 42 and compressed symmetrically therein so as to maintain the proper axis to said bore, and at the same time, maintain a circular opening. ,In the compression and flexure of the element 31, it will also appear that the end of the passage 31a directed to the left or toward the bore 42 is flared.
It will also be apparent that the greater the element 31, the greater will be the reduction in diameter of the passage 31a, and the thickness'of the element 31 may be varied to provide a wider range of compression, and these adjustments of the size of the passage 31a will adopt a single element 31 to different sizes of strands. It will also be understood that in commercial practice, there is a wide range of wire sizes and conductor sizes employed, going into large cable sizes. The entire device is constructed in a number of sizes consistent with the drastic changes in diameters, whereas a single device will compensate for numerous sizes wired within predetermined limits.
The ring 4| also includes laterally extending arms 4| 0, note Fig. 4, which extend into recesses- 43 in the frame part 34c to key the ring against rotation in the frame and permit only longitudinal movement with respect to the axis of the wire in the operation of the screw 43. This also avoids any possible rotation of the element 31, as will be apparent.
In Fig. 6 of the drawing, I have indicated at 44 a modified form of die which may be substituted for the die 35, and with this die, the bore 44a thereof is provided with a plurality of inwardly projecting ribs or fingers 44b.adapted to engage the strand or conductor to centralize the same in said die and to form by the recesses 440 between the projecting fingers 44b substantially even deposits of the compound on the strand, which deposits will be slushed into a circumferential coating of even thickness in passing through the wiper element 31, the. surplus of the compound being structure shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. With the structure shown in this figure, the die first removes part of the surplus compound on the strand, and after passing through the element 31, the compound on the strand is brought to' a finished and desired size with the additional surplus removed.
In Fig. 8 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification of the construction shown in Fig. 2, wherein 45 indicates part of the frame similar to a part 340, and 46 a ring similar to the ring 4|. With this construction, the bore of the frame part 45 is made large and threaded to receive a plug is employed in the ring 46 being in threaded engagement therewith so that the bore 48a. of the supplemental ring may be increased or decreased consistent with the change in the bore 41a of the die element 41, and at the same time, to modify the diameter of the projecting collar portion which is formed by theflange 48b of the supplemental ring 48." The ring lii also includes the laterally extending arms to to key the sameagainst rotation with respect to the frame member 45, the latter being part of a frame structure similar in all other respects to the structure 7 shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
It will be understood that the wiper unit orthe frame 34 thereof will be adjusted with respect to its" support so as to position the several passages of the frame in alinement with the strand suspended between the two points of support, namely, the sheaves l5 and I8, or any other supports or guides which may be provided. By maintaining the strand centrally with respect to the passages in the wiper unit, and especially the element 31 thereof, the application of an even thickness coating on the strand is made possible.
