Abstract
1399721 Twisting metal USS ENG & CONSULTANTS Inc 18 July 1972 [26 July 1971] 33649/72 Heading B3E An elongated twisted object such as a stone sawing strand, having the direction of twist reversed at intervals along its length, is made an apparatus comprising a twister head strand 6 and entry and exit tensioning stands 4, 8, there being means for gripping the object at each stand, means for twisting the object at the twister head, and means for urging the gripping means at the other stands away from each other so as to submit the object to tension as it shortens during twisting. As shown, the object S which may be a single rod or a plurality of strips, passes from a supply reel 2, through a gripper, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), on a slider 38 on stand 4. The gripper is controlled by a pneumatic cylinder 56, and the slider is connected to a pneumatic jack assembly 34. The object then passes through a rotary twisting head 112 having a gripper 136, Figs. 8-11 (not shown), operated by a pneumatic cylinder 154, through a gripper, Figs. 15-18 (not shown), on a slider on stand 8, and then to a take up reel 10. The gripper is operated by pneumatic cylinder 90, and the slider connected to a second pneumatic jack assembly 34. The stands are secured to selected ones of a series of foundations 12 in accordance with a selected distance between twist reversals. Pneumatic control lines run alongside the foundations from a control station, and are connectible to the pneumatic equipment on the stands. In operation, a length of object S to be twisted is run between stands 4 and 8 by motor 11, then jack assemblies 34 are extended to move the sliders to centred positions. All three grippers are then operated, and motor 102 energized to twist the object. Pneumatic pressure in jack assemblies 34 is maintained so as to submit the object to constant tensions as it shortens due to twisting. The motor 102 is connected to the twisting head through a brake and clutch unit which automatically operates so as to allow the object to take its own set after twisting.
