Abstract
748,357. Annealing. SOMERSET WIRE CO., Ltd. May 18, 1954 [June 1, 1953; Aug. 10, 1953], Nos. 15235/53 and 22055/53. Class 72. [Also in Group XXII] A method of straightening cold drawn wire, rod or tube of high tensile steel, that is medium or high carbon steel or suitable alloy steel, comprises heating successive lengths of the wire or the like to a tempering temperature e.g. 220-500‹C. for carbon steels and up to 600‹C. for cold workable alloy steels, and subjecting the heated wire at this temperature to a tensile force to give it a permanent elongation and straighten it. Cold drawn wire 12 wound on a braked drum 24, Fig. 3, is unwound therefrom and stretched by a winding onto a capstan 11, being heated between the drum and capstan by electric current from a generator 14 passing through bushes 16 along the wire 12 to the drum 24 and by a lesser current passing through the brushes 16 along the wire 12 to the capstan 11. The wire is cooled by water in a tube 20 through which the wire passes. In the arrangement of Fig. 1 the wire is drawn by the capstan 11 through a die 10, connected to the generator 14. For high carbon steel the temperature of the wire reached is between 250‹-350‹C., preferably between 270‹-310‹C., e.g. 277‹-300‹C. The steel wire may include À8 per cent C., À7 per cent Mn, À2 per cent Si and less than À05 per cent each of S and P. If the wire is galvanised the brushes 16 may be dispensed with and the current allowed to flow directly between the die 10 and the capstan 11, Fig. 4 (not shown). Instead of electric resistance heating, induction heating may be employed or the wire may be heated by passing through a lead or salt bath.
