Abstract

In a modification or improvement of the method of straightening cold drawn wire, strip, rod or tube of high tensile steel as disclosed in the parent Specification the wire is subjected to an intermediate heat treatment before rolling or drawing comprising rapidly cooling the steel wire from a temperature above the AC 3 point to a temperature within the range of 300 DEG to 450 DEG C., and maintaining the steel wire at the temperature within said range for a time sufficient to produce a bainitic structure in the steel. The rapid cooling is effected by immersing the steel within a bath of lead which is at a temperature above the melting point of lead and within the range of 300 DEG to 450 DEG C.
