Abstract

In a process of producing an overhead conductor wire, rimmed steel is made by the method of the Parent Specification, the billets are rolled into rod which is heated above the AC3 point (to about 1650 DEG F.) and quenched in molten lead at between 830 DEG and 975 DEG F., then pickled, limed, drawn into wire of the desired size, and finally galvanized. A steel wire so made may consist of 0.35-0.85 per cent C, up to 0.04 per cent Si; from 0.15 to 0.75 per cent Mn, and the balance Fe apart from residual impurities. The presence of P less than 0.002 per cent, S less than 0.03 per cent, Al less than 0.01 per cent, is also mentioned. The outer zone of lower C and S content produced by the parent process persists in the wire.
