Abstract
<PICT:0970723/C6-C7/1> A method of heat treating hot rolled carbon steel rods comprises quenching the rod from the rolls without producing a significantly different microstructure between the outside and the centre of the rod and giving a surface temperature of 1350 DEG F. (\sB30 DEG F.)-1450 DEG F. (\sB30 DEG F.) to the rod entering a coiling device and spraying atomized water on to the rod while being coiled to reduce the temperature throughout the cross-section of the rod to 900-1300 DEG F. As shown, rod 10 leaving rolls 11 passes into guides 18 supplied with water from a header 19 where it is quenched to give the required surface temperature. The rod then passes through a guide tube 22, where the surface and centre temperatures may equalize, and finally to a coiling device 12 where an atomized water spray completes the cooling to 900-1300 F. Specification 342,189 and U.S.A. Specification 2,658,012 are referred to.
