Abstract
<PICT:1081434/C6-C7/1> A steel workpiece containing up to 0.25% of carbon and up to 1% of manganese is heated to a temperature above 1500 DEG F. and is then quenched to reduce the temperature from 1500 DEG F. to below 700 DEG F. in less than 0.5 second so forming a uniform martensitic structure, the quenching being effected by subjecting the surfaces of the workpiece to pressurized continuous streams of coolant. In a particular form of apparatus for quenching tubes as shown in Fig. 1, tube 7 is removed from furnace 8 on rollers 32 and passed over a boom 16 on the end of which is mounted an internal quench head 10, while the exterior is simultaneously quenched by ring 2. The head and the ring are provided with numerous openings from which the coolant supplied at high pressure by pump 23 is discharged on to the workpiece in the form of continuous rod-like streams. The apparatus is provided with a second boom 17 with quenching head 11, the two booms being movable transversely so that they may be used alternately, while the ring 2 is movable axially to facilitate discharge of the quenched tubes.
