Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of quenching crack, in quenching the steel pipe, by changing an injection pressure of a cooling water supplied into the pipe as an auxiliary cooling agent in accordance with a quenching process to maintain uniform cooling effect. CONSTITUTION:The steel pipe heated to an austenitizing temp. is fixed on a receiving standard 4 in a liquid tank 3 and a cooling water is injected from a cooling water injecting nozzle 6 for cooling an outer surface of said steel pipe and a cooling water injecting nozzle 7 for cooling an inner surface thereof provided at intervals to quenching inner and outer surfaces of said steel pipe 1 by cooling. In this case, in order to exclude air in the pipe at early stages of the tempering, the inner surface cooling water is injected at a low pressure of about 0.5-3kg/cm<2> and, subsequently, the pressure of said cooling water is switched to a steady pressure of about 3-12kg/ cm<2> required in the quenching or said pressure is raised from the low pressure to the normal pressure continuously and gradually. By this method, the generation of quenching crack can be surely prevented and, because uniform cooling is obtained at the inner surface of the steel pipe 1 to be quenched, a roundness and a straightness degrees of the steel pipe 1 are improved.
