Abstract

717,166. Etching. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 10, 1952 [June 19, 1951], No. 14473/51. Class 100 (2). [Also in Group XXII] In a method of making perforated metal screens a member 1, Fig 1, having ribs 3 continuous with thinner areas 4 is intermittently etched until the thinner areas 4 are perforated. A silver screen is made by e'ectrodepositing a member 1 on a grooved copper matrix 2 and repeatedly etching the member 1 in a mixture of concentrated sulphuric and nitric acid, followed by repeated washing and drying. In another method the member 1 is made the cathode in an etching solution of nitric acid which renders the surface passive, the passivity being removed by passing intermittent pulses of electric current. In another method the member 1 is etched by electrolysis in a silver cyanide bath containing excess cyanide. Intermittent passage of electric current automatical'y results from the member becoming alternately inhibited and uninhibited.
