Abstract
1309252 Electro-plating of fibres INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 16 March 1970 [25 March 1969] 15600/69 Heading C7B [Also in Division D1] Electrically conductive fibres of a bundle are spread prior to entering an electro-plating bath. The spreading is performed by effecting relative movement between the bundle and fluid jets so as to successively subject the bundle to several rows of fluid jets, each row extending transverse to the length of the bundle and the number of jets in successive rows increasing so as to progressively spread the fibres apart. As shown, a bundle of graphite fibres passes through a bath of electrolyte in a tank 1. The fibres are loosened by an oscillating device 5, spread, before entering the bath, by jets of electrolyte in a device 6 (illustrated in more detail in Figs. 2 and 3, (not shown)) and electro-plated as they pass over an anode 9, the fibres being separated from the anode by a perforated spacer. The electrolyte is continuously circulated through ducts 7 and 8. Typically the anode is Ag and the electrolyte NaCN and AgCN in water. The electro-plated fibres may be pressed and sintered so as to form reinforced components.
