Abstract

1,220,277. Continuous electro-plating. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Nov.25, 1968 [Nov.24, 1967], No.55845/68. Heading C7B. Wire, rod, stranded cable or strip 11 is continuously electro-plated passing past one or more anodes 12 in a plating bath 10 using at least one pair of rolls 13-16, one 15 of which serves as cathode, and a metallic shield 21 positioned between the anode(s) and cathodic roll 15 and maintained at a negative potential, preferably at least 0.03 volt more negative than the cathodic roll, to prevent plating on the surface of the roll 15. The shield 21 may be perforated, of expanded metal or in the form of a grid or screen of stainless or Cr-plated steel, Sn, Cu or brass. The cathodic rolls 13, 15 may be of steel or Cr-plated, paired with rubbercovered back-up rolls 14, 16. The process is particularly applicable to electro-tinning steel strip, but may also use plating baths of acid or cyanide Zn or Cu, or of Ni.
