Abstract

In a method of selective electro-plating of strip to give a stripe of electro-deposited metal longitudinally along one side of the strip a driven roller 10 is partly immersed in an electrolyte 2, a strip 15 is moved in a longitundinal direction through strip guide 14 so as to leave a gap 18 between the strip and the upper peripheral part of the roller. Rotation of the roller entrains electrolyte to fill the gap and the strip and rollers are connected respectively as cathode and anode in an electrical circuit. The roller may be made of stainless steel, graphite or platinized titanium and a plurality of such rollers may be arranged side by side on the same shaft to provide a plurality of longitudinal stripes. The rollers may be immersed in the same or different baths. Alternatively a plurality of rollers may be arranged in line to build up the required thickness of deposit in a single stripe. The strip to be plated may be of metal, e.g. brass, copper, nickel or alloys, or of electro-plateable plastics material. The metal deposited may be zinc, tin, lead or gold, silver or platinum or alloys thereof or with small amounts of non-ferrous metals such as nickel, copper, cobalt and zinc. The electrolyte may be recycled between the bath 2 through a filter and a reservoir 5 which is provided with means for connecting the composition.
