731,952. Electrolytic pickling. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Oct. 2, 1952 [May 21, 1952], No. 24685/52. Class 41. A method of electrolytically cleaning low carbon steel strip for electrolytic tinning comprises passing the strip through a dilute acid bath, the immersed portion being a cathode at a current density of 25 to 50 amps. per sq. ft., then passing it through a second dilute acid bath where the immersed portion is an anode at a current density of 20 to 40 amps. per sq. ft., and controlling the speed so that each point along the strip is immersed in the baths for a total of approximately 6 seconds. The strip may be treated as an anode in a third bath at a current density of 75 to 110 amps. per sq. ft. Strip 10 is unwound from a coil 11 and passes through tanks 12, 13 and 14 over guide rolls 15, 16, 17 and 18, and under rolls 19, 20 and 21. The strip passes between two pairs of anodes 23 in tank 12, between two pairs of cathodes 24 in tank 13, and between one pair of cathodes 25 in tank 14. The tanks may contain 6 per cent sulphuric acid solution. Electrolytic treatment in tank 14 may be omitted.
