Abstract

933,949. Electrolytically coating metallic sheets or strip with zinc. STEEL CO. OF WALES Ltd. May 3, 1962 [March 20, 1961], No. 10106/61. Class 41. A process for electrolytically coating zinc on to only one side of metallic sheets or strip, e.g. of steel, tin, aluminium or brass, comprises the steps of placing two sheets together face to face, feeding the sheets through an electrolytic bath in abutting relationship so that the outer surface of the two sheets are coated and then separating the sheets. The sheets may be positively joined together during the process by adhesive, taping or magnetically. The electrolyte may comprise 40 to 50 ozs./gallon zinc sulphate acidified with 1 oz./gallon sulphuric acid. The plating apparatus comprises cells with supporting rollers for the sheets and transverse anodes <SP>5</SP>/16 inch above and below them. A current of 30,000 amps is passed to give a coating of 0.0001 inch at a sheet speed of 60 ft./min. The complete process comprises alkali cleaning, water spray washing, pickling, further washing, zinc plating, further washing, chromating, hot water washing and drying in an oven.
