Abstract
A hot trap for the removal of hydrogen impurity from molten alkali metals incorporates a metal getter, e.g. zirconium, having a coating which is hydrogen-permeable and compatible with the alkali metals at the operating temperature. A suitable coating is of nickel or nickel alloy 1 to 6 X 10-5 inches thick. According to an example, a coated getter is prepared by etching zirconium sheet with ammonium bifluoride solution and electroplating the etched sheet with nickel using a plating bath of nickel sulphate, nickel chloride and boric acid at a temperature of 56 DEG C. and a current density of 25A/ft.2. Alternatively, the zirconium sheet may be coated with a nickel alloy by vapour deposition. The trap is operated at a temperature of 200-450 DEG C.
