Abstract
564,489. Electrodeposition of tin. METAL & THERMIT CORPORATION. March 10, 1943, No. 3887. Convention date, Aug. 12, 1942. Drawings to Specification. [Class 41] Tin is deposited from a bath containing .25 to 3 mols. per litre of potassium stannate and .15 to 3.5 mols. per litre of potassium hydroxide and maintained at a temperature within the range of about 50 C. to substantially the boiling point of the electrolyte, the cathode current density being within the range of about 30 to 1000 amperes/sq. foot and the cathode efficiency between about 60 per cent and 100 per cent. In one example, the bath contains 1.21 mols. per litre of stannate and .29 mols. per litre of hydroxide and is maintained at a temperature of substantially 90 C., the anode and cathode current densities being between 60 and 100 amperes/sq. foot. In a second example, the bath contains 1.6 mols. per litre of stannate and 2.14 mols. per litre of hydroxide and is maintained at the same temperature, the anode and cathode current densities being between 150 and 200 amperes /sq. foot. Oxidizing agents, such as hydrogen peroxide and alkali metal perborates and foaming agents, such as potassium resinate or oleate, may be used in the bath. The process is particularly applicable to continuous strip plating.
