Abstract
An aqueous bath for electrodeposition of bright chromium plate comprises: divalent chromium salt 0.1-2 gm. moles/litre; formic acid and/or glycollic acid 0.3-1 gm. moles/litre; alkali metal salt of formic acid, glycollic acid or an acid 0.3-4 gm. moles/litre having a dissociation constant of at least 1X10-2 (e.g. HCl or H2SO4); and has a pH of 1.7-4.5. In preferred solutions boric acid is added (0-3 gm. moles/litre) with a fluoride (0-5 gm. moles/litre). The bath may be operated at room temperature up to 90 DEG C., at 20-450 amps/sq.ft. with an inert anode (e.g. carbon or graphite) and a metallic cathode. An inert gas blanket may be maintained above the bath to inhibit oxidation of the Cr++ compounds, and a wetting agent may be added to promote frothing which has a similar protective effect. The chromium may be plated on brass which can then be removed with nitric acid to give a high tensile strength foil. The foil may be baked, before or after the removal of the brass, at a temperature of 200-350 DEG C. for a period of from a few seconds up to one hour. U.S.A. Specifications 2,823,095, 2,996,353 and 3,088,801 are referred to.
