Abstract

393,039. Electrolytic surface treatment of copper and its alloys. VERNON, W. H. J., Chemical Research Laboratory, Teddington, Middlesex. March 7, 1932, No. 6757. [Class 41.] Copper or a copper alloy is coated with green patina of basic copper sulphate by anodic treatment in an electrolyte containing a soluble sulphate and an oxidizing agent. A suitable electrolyte contains 10 per cent magnesium sulphate, 2 per cent magnesium hydroxide, and 2 per cent potassium bromate. A temperature of 95‹ C. and current density 4 amps per sq. dem. at 5 volts are suitable. Cathodes of stainless steel or carbon may be used.
